KSSO events for the month of October
Posted on 18. Sep, 2009 by KSSO in News, Research, Seminar
A new academic year will begin with a new round of KSSO events.
Over the coming months the UK Kurdish Studies and Student Organisation will be announcing its programme of events for the 2009/2010 academic year.
In October KSSO will host three events starting off with a seminar on statelessness titled “Citzenship and Statelessness in Syria” given by Robert Lowe, manager and research fellow for the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House, and Alan Shamoson. Mr Lowe is an expert on Kurdish issues with a special focus on Syria. The date of the event is October 8th at SOAS University, starting at 6pm in the Khalili lecture conference room.
On October 22nd Dr. Maja Cederberg of Oxford Brooks University will be holding a seminar on “Presences and absences in stories about racism and disadvantage.“ This seminar will take a broad look at issues of racism and disadvantage including the case of Kurdish communities.
KSSO will announce the times and exact room locations for these events closer to the event dates, but please do make a note in your diaries.
We welcome all new and old Kurdish and non-Kurdish students, as well as non-students, and hope to make 2009/2010 another successful year for KSSO.
For future events please see our new events calendar at the bottom of the page.

Was wondering why your organisation is so Lowkey…i mean i am a student in london higher education and some kurdish friends but seems no one actually knows about the KSSO! and thats a big shame as the contribution could be HUGE! i think your missing out on alot of potentially talented kurdish students in particular only because at freshers fairs and the like there are no representatives, as there are for the other ones such as the arab society and the Turks.
My point being….who exactly is your target students? And how are your events organised?
I would love to contribute and get more involved its just sad that hardly any kurds actually know about this stuff.
Thanks for your time.
Daroon
Hi Daroon,
Thanks for the comment. You’re the type of Kurdish student we’re looking for. The thing with KSSO is that we only recently had a revamp of our website, which is our main form of communication. Since then we have been getting wider attention from more students. However, we do also have good turn out to our events by Kurdish students, and if you visit our events page and gallery you will see we have organised many seminars and activities.
It’s funny you should mention freshers fayres because we’ve been discussing this at KSSO and if you check our latest post it is a call out to establish more Kurdish societies at British universities.
If you want to get involved, then please sign up to our mailing list on the ‘Contact’ page. Also if you are interested in setting up a Kurdish society, and if you know others, then please go to the Facebook page we created a few weeks back:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=114215953993&ref=search&sid=789185144.2560853350..1
But even better, please come to our next event in October and introduce yourself so that we can take it further.
Best regards,
KSSO management committee
